Kyurem: A Raid Guide

Kyurem is an odd Pokemon. It’s the first Dragon/Ice type and while that’s a first for the series, that isn’t what makes it unique. What makes it special is being the first Pokemon to be able to fuse with Zekrom or Reshiram to form Black Kyurem or White Kyurem. Both are very powerful and I’ll be keen to see how Niantic implements this because in the main series games Black 2 and White 2 , it requires you to have the item DNA Splicers and one of Reshiram or Zekrom.

They could just release it as a legendary on its own, no need to evolve it but it would be considered as another variant of Kyurem. We’ve already seen this in Giratina with its Altered and Origin Formes, then Niantic released Armored Mewtwo. They’re not just reskins of one another but distinct enough to practically be different Pokemon. So if they want

Despite being the third member of the Tao Trio(Zekrom, Reshiram, Kyurem), Kyurem is the weakest of the three. It has a max CP of 3575, 246 attack, 170 defence and 245 stamina. Compared to the other two who could cross the 4000 CP mark and having better offensive stats, Kyurem lags behind by quite a bit. However that doesn’t make it awful, Kyurem is still one of the top Ice types in the game. In fact, it will be the best Ice type despite lacking a fast Ice move. So it’s still worth getting if you’re missing a good Ice type Pokemon.

Resists Weak To Normal Damage
Electric Fairy Ice
Grass Dragon Normal
Water Rock Poison
Fighting Ghost
Steel Dark

Having Ice as a type doesn’t do much for Kyurem other than cancel out Dragon’s weakness to Ice. That’s the only type that Ice resists while adding more weakness to the 3 Dragon already possesses. Dragon returns the favour to Ice by removing its weakness to Fire. Rock, Dragon,Steel,Fighting and Fairy have plenty of strong contenders to take on Kyurem.

Fast Move Type Power
Dragon Breath Dragon 6
Steel Wing Steel 11

Dragon Breath has great neutral coverage and will hit all of your Pokemon hard with the except of Steel or Fairy types. Steel Wing has a good amount of neutral coverage too unless you’re using a Steel, Fire, Electric or Water type. Both moves shouldn’t trouble your Pokemon unless their levels are low.

Charge Move Type Power Bars
Blizzard Ice 130 1
Dragon Claw Dragon 50 3
Draco Meteor Dragon 150 1
Icy Wind Ice 60 3

Blizzard and Icy Wind, I’ll assess them together. Icy Wind is its worst move but it’ll still come off as annoying because as a 3 bar move, it’ll be firing off Icy Wind very often compared to Blizzard which is slow but will decimate your team if they aren’t bulky enough to take at least one cold blast. With Blizzard, it’s like getting hit by a nuke but Icy Wind is like death by a thousand cuts.

Dragon Claw and Draco Meteor are in the same boat, Dragon Claw takes Icy Wind’s spot while Draco Meteor fills in for Blizzard. Dragon Claw on its own would appear to be worse than Icy Wind. A 3 bar 50 power move compared to a 3 bar 60 power move. Both of them get STAB so in theory Icy Wind should beat Dragon Claw. You couldn’t be more wrong.

Dragon Claw when paired with Dragon Breath is the best move pairing available to it. Icy Wind loses badly because it doesn’t get any Ice fast move to go with it. A Dragon Breath and Claw combination will be hurting your team rapidly due to the short charge time for Dragon Claw.

As for Draco Meteor, it’s not bad but as we’ve seen on Dragonite and Salamence, its a subpar 1 bar move. If it were at least 150 power a case could be made for it. As a raid boss, it’s a move you’ll be happy to see used on it because it’ll only use it infrequently meaning infrequent changing of your Pokemon. It’s at least able to pair with Dragon Breath to form a moveset with STAB.

Assembling The Team

Ice has a lot of weaknesses to exploit, so you won’t be lacking in Pokemon to counter Kyurem. Below are just some of the following Pokemon you can use and it’s alright if you don’t have them. They are meant to be guidelines rather than actual hard rules to tell you what you must use.

Metagross starts by resisting every move Kyurem could use thanks to its Steel typing. It’s a very straightforward choice for moves here, Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash. Meteor Mash is a Community Day exclusive move so if you want a Meteor Mash Metagross, then you’ll have to trade for it. No moves from Kyurem ought to worry you here if you have a high CP Metagross.

Dialga like Metagross, has good resistances to Kyurem’s moves. Unlike Metagross,Dialga takes neutral damage from Dragon moves because its Steel/Dragon typing negates Dragon’s weakness to itself. The best moveset for Dialga against Kyurem would be either Metal Claw or Dragon Breath paired with Draco Meteor. Metal Claw is better for overall damage but don’t fret, both fast moves are STAB super effective against Kyurem.

A Pokemon that is available all year round unlike Dialga, Rampardos is a great Rock type counter to Kyurem. It doesn’t resist any of Kyurem’s moves and it is weak to Kyurem’s Steel Wing. Steel Wing being a fast move makes it harder to predict so you’ll have to take your chances on this if you wish to use Rampardos. As for moves, go with Smack Down and Rock Slide.

Honorable Mention

It’s been quite a while since Rayquaza has been released and by now most players should have a few Rayquaza to use. An extremely risky choice given it’s double weakness to Ice, you should try your best to avoid walking into A Kyurem using Icy Wind or Blizzard. You’ll go down in one hit so not a lot of time to do a lot of damage. Nevertheless, if you can predict with certainty Kyurem is going to be using its Dragon moves you can go ahead and use Rayquaza with the moves Dragon Tail and Outrage.

Is Kyurem worth getting? Yes if you need a good Ice type. Yes because if Niantic release Black Kyurem and White Kyurem, you’re going to get two powerhouses that require Kyurem candies to power up. So get it once it comes out, because you’ll be getting one very strong Ice type and setting yourself up nicely for its stronger Black and White counterparts.
